Family Courts Act 2024: new family courts from 2027, tracked

The Family Courts Act 2024 creates a Family High Court, a Family Circuit Court and a Family District Court, with the District Court taking far more family work. The Department of Justice has said the first new courts will sit from January 2027. Until each part is commenced by ministerial order, today's courts, forms and venues apply.

    The Bill was published by the Department of Justice and introduced in the Seanad.

    The Act was signed by the President in late 2024. Signing does not change the rules: each provision starts only when commenced by ministerial order. Date to be recorded from the Oireachtas record.
